Singer and actor Prashant Tamang, who rose to national fame after winning Indian Idol Season 3, passed away on Sunday at his residence in New Delhi. Prashant Tamang died at the age of 43 after suffering a stroke, leaving the Indian music and film fraternity in deep shock.
A native of Darjeeling, Prashant Tamang was born on January 4, 1983. He lost his father at a young age and later joined the Kolkata Police as a constable. While serving in the police force, Tamang continued to nurture his love for music and performed with the police orchestra, a journey that eventually led him to the national stage.
During his participation in Indian Idol in 2007, Prashant Tamang became much more than a contestant. His journey created a powerful sense of unity and pride among people from the Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars, Sikkim, the Northeast, and the global Gorkha community.

His success on television opened doors to cinema as well. Prashant made his film debut in the Nepali blockbuster Gorkha Paltan (2010) and went on to act in films such as Angalo Yo Maya Ko, Kina Maya Ma, Nishani, Pardesi, and Kina Mayama.
On Indian television, he appeared as a guest on Amber Dhara and later played a pivotal role as Daniel Lecho in Paatal Lok Season 2, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Raju Bista Mourns Prashant Tamang’s Death
Reacting to the tragic news, Raju Bista, Member of Parliament from Darjeeling and National Spokesperson of the BJP, expressed deep sorrow over Prashant Tamang’s death.
“The untimely demise of Prashant Tamang, the popular singer and actor, has left the Gorkha community and the entire world of arts and music stunned and heartbroken,” Bista said. He added that Prashant was serving with the West Bengal Police Orchestra when he participated in Indian Idol.
According to Bista, Prashant Tamang’s passing is an irreparable loss to Indian music, cinema, and especially the Gorkhali community. By winning Indian Idol in 2007, Prashant brought national recognition to the Gorkhas of India and helped Nepali music gain wider visibility.
