New Delhi, November 10, 2025 — A powerful explosion near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort (Lal Quila) on Monday evening sent shockwaves across the capital. The blast occurred close to Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, leaving at least 8 people dead and over two dozen injured, according to early reports from Delhi Police.
What Happened
Eyewitnesses said the explosion took place around 6:20 PM when a white car suddenly burst into flames near the busy Chandni Chowk–Lal Quila stretch, one of Delhi’s most crowded areas.
Within seconds, multiple vehicles caught fire, and thick black smoke filled the sky near the historic Red Fort.
Locals described scenes of chaos — people running for safety, broken glass everywhere, and the sound of sirens echoing through the narrow lanes of Old Delhi.
“It felt like an earthquake. The blast was so loud that the ground shook. We saw burning cars and people screaming,” said a shopkeeper near Lal Quila Metro Station.
Initial Investigation
Delhi Police and fire tenders rushed to the spot immediately. The NIA (National Investigation Agency) and Delhi Police Special Cell have taken charge of the investigation.
While the cause of the Delhi blast is still being verified, senior officials have not ruled out the possibility of a terror attack. Sources said that forensic teams are examining whether explosives were planted in the vehicle or if it was an accidental blast due to a fuel cylinder or mechanical fault.
Delhi on High Alert
Following the Red Fort blast, the entire national capital has been put on high alert.
Security has been tightened across metro stations, markets, and tourist hotspots. Police presence has increased at Connaught Place, India Gate, and major railway stations.
The Home Ministry has instructed security agencies to remain on guard, especially after recent reports of 2,900 kg of explosives recovered in Faridabad, just days before the Delhi explosion.
“We are treating this incident with utmost seriousness. The entire stretch near Red Fort, Lal Quila Metro Station, and Chandni Chowk is sealed for investigation,” said Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha.
Eyewitness Accounts
Residents nearby said they saw a car engulfed in flames within seconds of the blast. A local rickshaw puller described the chaos:
“There was a loud boom, and suddenly fire spread to other cars. People were crying and running. We pulled out injured people before the police arrived.”
Medical Response
Ambulances rushed the injured to LNJP Hospital and Lok Nayak Hospital. Doctors confirmed multiple burn injuries, and some victims remain critical. Emergency wards have been placed on standby as more victims are being brought in from the site.
Red Fort and Its Significance
The Red Fort (Lal Quila) is one of India’s most iconic landmarks, symbolizing the country’s freedom and history. Every Independence Day, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag here.
A blast near the Red Fort thus raises major national security concerns and is being seen as a direct challenge to the capital’s safety.
Government Response
Home Minister Amit Shah has been briefed on the situation and is monitoring updates closely. A high-level meeting between the Home Ministry, NIA, and Delhi Police has been called to review preliminary findings.
The Prime Minister’s Office has also expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Delhi bomb blast.
