Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Thursday (February 5, 2026) launched the Bharat Taxi app, India’s first cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, marking a major shift in the country’s mobility ecosystem.
The launch event was held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, in the presence of Minister of State for Cooperation Krishan Pal Gurjar, Union Minister of State for Cooperation & Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, and senior officials from the cooperative sector.
Bharat Taxi App Expansion Plan: Pan-India Rollout in Three Years
Speaking at the launch, Amit Shah said the Bharat Taxi app will be rolled out nationwide within the next three years.
“In three years, Bharat Taxi will expand across the country — from Kashmir to Kanniyakumari and from Dwarka to Kamakhya,” he said.
Currently, the Bharat Taxi app has been launched in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, with plans to expand to all States and Union Territories within the next two years.
What Is Bharat Taxi App?
Bharat Taxi is India’s first driver-owned, cooperative-led ride-hailing platform, registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002. The platform was officially established on June 6, 2025.
Unlike existing ride-hailing apps, Bharat Taxi operates on a zero-commission and surge-free pricing model, ensuring that profits are shared directly with drivers.
Customers using the Bharat Taxi app can book:
- Cars
- Three-wheelers
- Two-wheelers
Bharat Taxi vs Uber, Ola, Rapido
India’s ride-hailing market is currently dominated by private players such as Uber, Ola, and Rapido. The Bharat Taxi app positions itself as a desi, cooperative-driven alternative to these foreign investment-backed platforms.
Key differentiators of the Bharat Taxi app include:
- No commission is charged from drivers
- No surge pricing for users
- Direct profit distribution to drivers
- Transparent and cooperative ownership model
Pilot Success: Strong Adoption by Drivers and Users
The Bharat Taxi app began pilot operations on December 2, 2025, backed by eight major cooperative organisations, in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat.
According to the Ministry of Cooperation:
- Over 3 lakh drivers have joined the platform
- More than 1 lakh users have registered
- Over 10,000 rides are completed daily
- Around ₹10 crore has been distributed directly to drivers
The Ministry also described Bharat Taxi as the world’s first and largest cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, and the largest driver-owned mobility platform globally.
Social Security for Drivers: Bharat Taxi’s Core Focus
Drivers on the Bharat Taxi app, referred to as “Sarathis”, are provided with comprehensive social security benefits, including:
- Health insurance
- Accident insurance
- Retirement savings support
- Dedicated grievance redressal system
At present, Bharat Taxi operates seven driver support centres in Delhi, offering on-ground assistance and operational help.
A Cooperative Revolution in India’s Mobility Sector
With its cooperative ownership, zero-commission structure, and driver-first approach, the Bharat Taxi app aims to reshape India’s ride-hailing industry by empowering drivers and ensuring fair pricing for users.
As the platform scales nationwide, Bharat Taxi is expected to emerge as a strong indigenous alternative in India’s fast-growing urban mobility market.
